Power System Protection

Power System protection is a very complex and integrated system of protection relays/schemes that are set/graded to trip only the correct faulted plant, it must be selective, sensitive, discriminate and as fast as possible to isolate the minimum amount of equipment.

The philosophies used in protecting substations and associated equipment and entire networks must be understood in order to detect faulty equipment and restore supply as fast and as safely as possible.

Protection Specialist with ESKOM

Barry commenced his career with ESKOM in 1977 and over the years has acquired substantial experience in the field of System protection. He is presently a Field Protection Specialist with ESKOM since 1996. He is tasked with the setting up of training programs and training of students, young staff members in the protection field & has also been a mentor to them.

 

His Protection experience includes commissioning, fault investigations, breakdown maintenance, planned routine maintenance and application design of the following: From 6.6 kV to 132 kV: Bus Bar Protection, Bus Couplers, Bus Sections, Feeder Schemes Lines and Cable Transformers, Capacitor Banks, Transformer line banks.

The Design of a Substation is a complex one involving a multiplicity of components & possible arrangements. Therefore it is an ideal subject for a knowledge-based system able to produce an optimal design. The main issues facing a power engineer are reliability and cost.

Therefore a good design attempts to strike a balance between these two, to achieve sufficient reliability without the excessive cost. The design should ideally also allow for easy expansion of the Substation if required.

Accredited Professional Engineer

Gavin Strelec is a registered Professional Engineer since 2003, with 14 years of related experience in the Electricity Utility Industry with Eskom. He has gained considerable experience in Substation Design as a Project Engineer, and subsequently Design standards and equipment specifications as a Substation Technology Specialist.

Over the last few years, he has been Eskom’s national specialist for several commodities, eventually appointed as Chief Engineer in Distribution Technology. He presently holds the position of Chief Engineer in Eskom’s Research Department specialising in High Voltage Engineering.
